Cave Church of Samaan el Kharraz. A.P.E.

recycling center and Cairo Opera House

Leave hotel at 08.00 and drive to the cave church. Some people climbed the mountain to pray in the quiet and stillness. This was where they were told by the lord to build the church. The first was of corrugated iron but later it was decided to use the caves and the natural amphitheatre in the side of the mountain. The largest and most spectacular is seats over 10,000 with an overhang of the cliff face over the front few rows ans the sanctuary.

After leaving the church we visit the A.P.E recycling center in garbage city where over 250 young women learn to  recycle fabrics into items such as quilts and bedspreads to be sold.

Lunch in restaurant and then on to view the magnificent opera house. The original building made of wood and completely destroyed by fire in 1971. In 1985 the construction of a new opera house commenced courtesy of a gift from the Japan.

The tour finishes approx. 4pm
